While Governor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun state has announced the
extension of the lockdown by one more week, upon the expiration of the seven days
earlier declared, as disclosed on the state government’s official twitter
handle, the residents of Mowe in the Mokoloki LGA have suddenly unlocked
themselves!

This is evident in their activities on the relaxation days which
is expected to end at 5pm on those particular days. Full masking of faces is
expected to be the top priority of everyone but the reverse is the case in the evenings
when the market area is expected to witness a ‘dead silence’.
One begins to wonder why the government starts with strong
enforcement of laws but later relax their policies with time.
Where are the monitors who are expected to be watchdogs in the
suburb? Guess they have gone to rest as
the market evenings witness larger crowds than the day time, almost all people
in the Otunba Gbenga Daniel market on the eve of the recent extension, were
seen unmasked, without maintaining any social distance.
The governor explained
that his decision was in line with the president’s directives ordering the gradual relaxation of the lockdown in the FCT, Lagos and Ogun states with safety measures like the use of face masks and social
distancing remaining the order of the day. This doesn’t seem to be taken any
seriously in Mowe as it was on the onset.
With this sudden switch, it is frightening to
say that the monster Covid-19 could hit the town unannounced. At the moment, Nigeria
Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), the country has so far recorded a total of
5,162 COVID-19 cases across 34 states and the FCT.
It’s doubtful if the residents are still cautious of their
safety and the essence of the lockdown!
Some don't believe there's a pandemic.
