A University of Illinois student faces murder charges after authorities say she suffocated her newborn baby after giving birth in a residence hall bathroom last month.

Police say officers found 20-year-old Lindsay L. Johnson of Monee near the campus Music Building on March 13 wearing a backpack with the deceased newborn inside.

Officers went looking for her after responding to a call earlier in the day from another student at the dorm who reported sounds of a baby crying and that Johnson was in the bathroom for a long time.

According to the Champaign County Circuit Court clerk's website, Johnson was charged Monday with murder, causing a child to be endangered/death and concealing a homicide.
