Sheriff’s Office: Student Arrested After She Kicked Over Desk, Throws Trash Can At Teacher

Deputies arrested an 18-year-old Glen Oaks High School student who allegedly screamed profanity, kicked over a desk and threw a trash can at a teacher Thursday, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

When a teacher spotted Renetta Nicole Thomas, of 16548 Webster Drive, skipping class at the high school, Thomas “became very irate as usual with her cursing (and) being disrespectful,” the East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff’s Office report says.

The teacher called the front office to ask for an administrator’s help, but Thomas left before the administrator arrived, the report says.

The teacher wrote up Thomas for disciplinary violations.

A few minutes later, Thomas burst into the teacher’s classroom, kicked over a desk — “causing it to fly across the classroom — and screamed at the teacher, calling her a profane name and said, “you got me suspended” while threatening the teacher, according to the report.

Thomas picked up a trash can and hurled it across the room at the teacher, who managed to step clear of the flying debris, the report says.

School administrators contacted Thomas’ mother and asked her to pick up her daughter, the report says.

A sheriff’s deputy working extra duty at the high school called Thomas’ mother, Touannette Jones, 40, who lives at the same address as her daughter, after the pair had already left and asked that they turn around so he could question the student, the report says.

Jones refused, cursed at the deputy and hung up the phone, the report says.

Deputies spoke with Jones at her home Saturday and arrested her on a bench warrant tied to an unresolved traffic violation, the report says.

Handcuffed in the back of the deputies’ patrol unit, Jones directed officers to a house on South 14th Street where they found and arrested Thomas, the report says.

Thomas, who denied assaulting the teacher, was booked into Parish Prison on counts of disturbing the peace and assault on a school teacher.

Thomas remained in Parish Prison Sunday evening. Bail had not been set.
